Francis Brooks Chadwick was born in Boston in 1850. In 1873 after studying at Harvard, he went to Paris, tt was at this time that Chadwick would introduce Sargent to his distant cousin Ralph Wormeley Curtis. Curtis had been a friend of Chadwick's from Harvard. In August 1880, he leaves with Sargent and friends for Belgium and Holland in order to study the works of Frans Hals. The same year that Sargent would paint his portrait. The artist was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris salon of both landscapes and figure studies from 1882 to 1900.
